Our Commitments

The ISPS Mission on Accessibility

We, at the Integrated Sustainable PaperSmart Services (ISPS) Secretariat, are committed to making our portal as well as information available on it accessible. We strongly believe in making information usable for ‘everyone,’ especially when digital information becomes the only crucial means of accessing information by persons with disabilities.

Every effort has been made to comply with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG 2.0) developed by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) standards under the Web Accessibility Initiative (WAI). ISPS will make reasonable efforts to provide or recommend alternatives wherever non-compliant, non-W3C formats (Flash, PDF etc.) or multimedia will be used.

The General Assembly Mandate

The General Assembly adopted under Resolution 61/106, the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD), which requests the Secretary-General to put into operation at United Nations, the guidelines put forth under CRPD.

Article 21 of the CRPD talks about the freedom of persons with disabilities to seek, receive and impart information and ideas on an equal basis with others and through all forms of communication of their choice while Article 9 lays emphasis on access to information and communications, including new information and communications technologies (ICTs) and systems, including the Internet; and to design, develop, produce and distribute accessible ICTs.

Inter-Departmental Task Force on Accessibility

The work of the ISPS Secretariat and its efforts in this direction are inspired by the work of the Inter-Departmental Task Force on Accessibility (IDTFA) at the United Nations Secretariat, especially in the areas of interpretation and documentation. The IDTFA is chaired by Mr. Magnus Olafsson, Director, Meetings and Publishing Division of the Department for General Assembly and Conference Management.

The ISPS Efforts and Beyond

In keeping with the General Assembly mandate, the ISPS Secretariat is striving towards providing equal access and opportunity, within existing resources. Some of these efforts include an accessible portal and accessible digital documents – also compatible with screen readers and magnifiers, documents in Braille, sign language interpretation and real time captioning.
